On the Ice (Heli-Hike Zone)

Foot access to the lower glacier permanently closed in 2019. Today, helicopters are the only way to physically walk on the ice.

The upper sections of Franz Josef Glacier feature dynamic ice formations. The glacier moves up to 4 meters per day, meaning the landscape constantly changes. The high accumulation zone receives 10 to 15 meters of snow annually.

Helicopter flights are strictly dependent on weather conditions. The West Coast cancellation rate is roughly 30% to 50%, so plan your schedule accordingly. Weather Cancellations

Ice Caves

Included in heli-hikeBest in winter

Meltwater flowing through the moving glacier creates these vivid blue tunnels. The structures change constantly as the ice shifts down the valley. The ice appears bluest during the colder winter months from June to August when the glacier is more stable.

Scenic flights touch down on the high accumulation zone, known as the neve. This option allows you to take photos on the snow without a physical hike. Bring sunglasses to protect your eyes from the intense alpine UV glare off the white ice.
